The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed on Saturday evening its success in forcing 37 ships to change course since the start of the maritime blockade imposed on Iran, as part of tightening the noose on Iranian energy exports. The US command explained on the "X" platform that the tanker M/V Sevan was among the 19 ships of the so-called "shadow fleet", on which the US Treasury imposed strict sanctions on charges of smuggling Iranian oil products. The contraband transported by these vessels included crude oil and natural gas as well as propane and butane, which they deliver to foreign markets, bypassing international sanctions. In a controlled interception operation, a US Navy helicopter took off from the destroyer USS Pinckney to intercept the offending tanker, which complied with US directives without resistance and is currently heading towards Iranian ports are under US military escort. The Central Command stressed its continued enforcement of economic sanctions and the strict implementation of the naval blockade against all ships heading to or leaving Iranian ports, stressing its commitment to preventing the smuggling of Iranian energy to global markets.
