A huge fire broke out at the RAF Fairford base currently used by the US Air Force. The fire caused the roof of a building to collapse without causing human casualties or damage to British aircraft.
The RAF base at Fairford was the scene of a massive fire that broke out at dawn on Sunday, the British Telegraph reported. This base currently hosts units of the US Air Force involved in military operations in the Middle East. Footage showed thick plumes of smoke rising from a building believed to be a catering store providing food and equipment to the base. The intensity of the fire caused the roof of the building to collapse during Firefighters attempt to control the incident. Fortunately, no human casualties were recorded, nor were any RAF aircraft damaged. Initial reports indicate that the fire started in an old abandoned building, while the extent of damage to US equipment remains undetermined. The British government allowed the US Air Force to use this base near the Wiltshire border last March, following escalating tensions in Middle East. The base is used to deploy U.S. bombers in operations described as “defensive.” The decision to host U.S. forces faced popular opposition, with some 200 people demonstrating on Saturday with banners demanding “no war on Iran” and“take the United States out of British bases.” The use of the Fairford base cut the flight time of American bombers in half, providing a long flight that would have taken 37 An hour round trip from Missouri.
