Former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced his resignation from his parliamentary seat following the resounding defeat of the Fidesz party in the recent elections. The decision came after party leaders met to discuss the restructuring, while Peter Magyar is preparing to take over as prime minister after his Tessa party won an overwhelming majority.
In a surprise development that shook the corridors of Hungarian politics, outgoing Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced his decision to give up his seat in the national parliament, ending a political presence that had lasted in the legislative hall since 1990. This announcement came in the wake of the resounding defeat suffered by the ruling Fidesz party in the recent parliamentary elections, where its seats fell to only 52 seats, compared to 141 seats won by the Fidesz party. In a video posted on his Facebook account, Orban revealed that the decision was taken during a stormy meeting of party leaders, in which it was decided to conduct a comprehensive restructuring of the parliamentary bloc to adapt to the new political reality after losing the power he had monopolized for 16 consecutive years. Despite his withdrawal from the parliamentary arena, Orban confirmed his adherence to the presidency of the Fidesz party, announcing his intention to run in the elections Ministry of Interior scheduled for next June, while entrusting the task of leading the parliamentary bloc to Jergeli Julias, his former office manager. On the other hand, Peter Magyar, who is preparing to assume the presidency of the government in early May, did not hesitate to issue sharp criticism of his political opponent through social media, accusing him of not taking responsibility for the electoral failure. European circles are betting on the new government to pass urgent democratic reforms.
