Lebanese President Joseph Aoun announced his categorical rejection of any humiliating agreement with Israel, stressing that the goal of direct negotiations is to end the state of war. Aoun made veiled criticism of Hezbollah, saying that the real betrayal lies in dragging the country into war and not in seeking to end it.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, during his meeting with a delegation from the Hasbaya region in the south, stressed that his firm position is based on rejecting any agreement that humiliates Lebanon, stressing at the same time the need to end the state of war with Israel. Aoun explained that the direct negotiations are aimed at reaching an agreement similar to the Armistice Agreement signed in 1949, questioning whether that agreement is considered humiliating, and reiterating his categorical rejection of any humiliating agreement. In a veiled response to the criticism of Hezbollah, which described direct negotiation as a "sin", the Lebanese president denounced the accountability of those who led the country to war for his decision to resort to negotiations, pointing to the absence of national consensus when making the decision of war. Aoun stressed that the real betrayal lies not in seeking to end the war through negotiations, but in dragging the country into an armed conflict for the sake of external interests, in a clear reference to the role played by Hezbollah In igniting the confrontation, the Lebanese president's position comes in the context of the internal debate about the legitimacy of direct negotiations with Israel, as Aoun seeks to justify this trend as a necessary step to stop the bloodshed of the war and protect Lebanese national interests.
